Frequent Answers and Questions About Air Purifiers
How
did you come up with your list of recommended products?
At Air
Purifiers America, we
base our suggestions on a combination of clean air delivery rates, independent
research and testing, and feedback from customers
who have used our products. Although we have analyzed data from all of
sources to create our exclusive list of solutions, we encourage you to consider
your specific situation when making your final air purifier choice.
Why
are IQAir and Alen™ air purifiers rated so highly?
We have
seen first-hand the performance of these products versus the competition and if
you are serious about removing airborne particles from the air, IQAir and Alen™
produce premier air purifiers. The
performance is unmatched, however the only potential drawback is that IQAir's
price is higher than most people can afford. That is why we are offering
the Alen™ A350 air purifier. It performs at a comparable level to the IQAir
at 98% particle removal rate and is priced at almost half the price of an IQAir
HealthPro.
I've
read that the Friedrich C-90B is the top rated air purifier, why is it not
listed in the recommendations?
The
Friedrich C-90B is a good model and Air Purifiers America used to carry this
unit. However our customers' feedback suggests that it does not perform as well
as the models we have listed in our recommendations for the specific indoor air
quality concerns. Many of our suggested models were not
included in the studies in which the Friedrich C-90 was rated highly.
The
Friedrich
C-90B is an
electrostatic air cleaner; our customers have reported three main drawbacks when
using this type of unit:
-
The
electrostatic plates get dirty quickly, and unless cleaned weekly there is
strong degradation in performance
-
The
electrostatic process creates small amounts of ozone, which is a health
concern and dangerous to the human body.
-
The
ozone results in a musty smell that is objectionable to most customers.
-
The
unit actually does a poorer job of removing particles from the air when
operated at high speed
Why
isn't there a common metric for measuring the performance of all air purifiers?
We wish
there was such a system. The answer
is that the manufacturers do not all agree on a common testing process and have
elected to not have their products tested in certain studies.
That's why we have created these suggestions, which include the research
that is available coupled with feedback from customers who have actually use
these products.
We feel
that the best air purifier should be able to remove a high percentage of
particles from the air. If you are allergic to pollen, dust or pet dander,
the more of these particles are removed from the air, the easier you can breathe
with less runny nose and itchy eyes. That is why we rely so much on the
particle meter to test these products.
Are
there any other products that you recommend?
Yes,
the BlueAir 501 and the BlueAir 601 air purifiers are very good units. The
Austin Air Healthmate and Healthmate Plus are above average hospital grade HEPA
purifiers and are a lower cost alternative to the IQAir HealthPro and HealthPro
Plus.
